Dean started training Muay Thai in 2009 under Krus Stephen Strotmeyer and Mark Deluca, founders of Pittsburgh Muay Thai. He starting fighting competitively in 2011. Dean went on to become the 2011 IAMTF Dayton Fights Champion in Dayton Ohio. For the next four years Dean continued training, but was unable to fight due to injury.
In 2015 Dean went to Thailand to train and fight at Rawai Muay Thai in Khao Lak, and winning his first fight in Thailand. The following year, in 2016, Dean fought and won again in Phuket, Thailand at Padong stadium. Dean has spent a total of 5 months in Thailand strictly training for fights at Rawai Muay Thai under3x Lumpinee Champion Kru Chanchai Tummarungsi.
Dean is one of the few Americans trained in the Cambodian striking art of Bokator, the precursor to Muay Boran and eventually Muay Thai. Dean has made several trips to Siem Reap, Cambodia to study Bokator with Grand Master San Kim Sean and his son Reach. The lessons and style of Bokator are evident in Dean's teaching and fighting style.
